Bredin, Mark. True beauty: finding grace in disabilities. Cambridge, Eng.: Grove Books, 2007.

Summary: God in salvation has shown that all of humanity is sinful and broken. It is a mistake to link grace with all the trappings of worldly beauty and economic success. Grace then invites us to see our weakness and created nature. However, we reject God’s grace and refuse to see ourselves as God sees us. We refuse to see the needs of others and we have become autonomous individuals. Yet it is in others, especially the faces of the sick, disfigured, and disabled, that we see reflected divine grace. The able- bodied are seduced by their independence and fail to see their need for God. The weak reveal those lies, and point to the need to see ourselves as created, rather than creator.

Summary: Reflection on the lived experiences of disabled people is more complex and fluid than the category suggests. The author states that one cannot define what is meant by “body” by studying only the healthy experience, just as one cannot study gender or race by looking only at the black, female perspective. As insights have come by engagement with the particularities of other marginal perspectives, reflection on disabilities also offer new theological contributions.

Downey, Michael. A Blessed Weakness: The Spirit of Jean Vanier and l’Arche. San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1986.

Summary: L’Arche has grown to include over seventy communities world-wide, representing over two hundred family-like homes. Loose in structure (yet high on organization), the communities of l’Arche are founded upon the belief in the uniqueness and sacredness of each person, whether handicapped or not. Motivated by the beatitudes in Christian living, the gifts of each person are to be nurtured and called forth with predilection for the poorest, weakest, and most wounded in community and society. This way of life is in itself a spirituality of the heart. Vanier and l’Arche have learned about the truth of God and humanity, based upon their experience of love with the wounded and the vulnerable, motivated by the conviction that each human being is unique and indeed sacred.
